How I tested the best shampoos for color treated hair?
I have red dyed hair, so I am the perfect person to check out these dry shampoos for colored hair. I tried them on myself and then gave them a rating on a scale of 1-5 depending on the following factors.
- Residue-Free Formula - One of the biggest complaints about dry shampoos (whether they are for color treated hair or not) is that some of them leave white residue or flaky buildup on hair. So I checked if the shampoos are residue-free.
- Color Pigment - Not all dry shampoos have these, but I checked if the shampoos contains dye pigment to enhance the color of your hair or not.
- Cleansing Power - Of course, the first and foremost job of a dry shampoo is to cleanse oil, dirt and other residue from hair without the use of water. So I also tested how well the shampoos removed oil and grease from scalp and hair.
Top Dry Shampoos For Color Treated Hair 2022
#1 - Ambiance dry shampoo
I know that powder dry shampoos are not very popular for color treated hair. But boy was I blown away by this one!
When I first applied it, I was fully expecting residue but you see this dry shampoo comes with a brown/black tint. So if you have black or brunette colored hair, it will blend right in.
And as it's not a spray Ambiance is made up of no CFCs, harsh chemicals or even parabens. So you can be sure that this will only soothe your hair and will not harshly affect your hair strands in any way.
If you are a brunette and you’re looking for a product to keep the brown on your hair, this is for you. This sleek package comes with a brush applicator which makes it super easy to apply onto all parts of your hair.
Besides keeping my hair color in place it also gave my hair volume and helped my fine and thin hair look really plump.
If you have grey roots, this shampoo works into covering it and giving you flawless hair.
The shampoo is not very expensive and comes at an affordable drugstore pricing.
So what's the downside? Well, this shampoo will obviously not work if you have light hair colors or a different color apart from browns/blacks.
Otherwise, I couldn't find any faults with this shampoo. I just wished they made it for different hair shades.
Pros:
- It's not a spray so it doesn't contain CFCs or alcohol or butane
- It's a pigmented powder that will also cover up greys or lighter hair at the roots.
- The powder is super absorbent and can easily remove oil and dirt from hair
Cons:
- Will not work on lighter hair shades
My Ratings:
- Residue-Free Formula - 4/5
- Color Pigment - 4.5/5
- Cleansing Power - 4.5/5
Tip
Do not use a hairdryer after you wash your hair with this dry shampoo instead comb through the strands with a big toothed comb.
#2 - Batiste hint of colour dry shampoo
Ok so Batiste is a super popular dry shampoo brand that almost everyone has heard of. So it would be criminal to leave out a Batiste product from this list of reviews.
I got this vibrant and red shade for my red-colored hair. And it went really well.
I found not residue on my hair after using which is surprising as Batiste is a drugstore brand. I wasn't expecting it to be this good.
Of course, this is a spray formula so like any other it contains butane and propane that are not the most eco-friendly. But thankfully, it's free of the more dangerous Chloroflurocarbons.
Now coming to the tint, it's a bit bright but not too obvious and blends right into your hair.
Oh, and if you do not have red hair then don't worry. Batiste has an entire range of dry shampoos for color treated hair, including products for more unconventional hair colors like blue and pink.
It is packaged in a spray bottle which makes it super easy to apply on the hair and even travel with it.
Pros:
- Very easy to apply as spray spreads through hair easily
- Color pigment helps cover greys and enrich hair color
- Travel-friendly packaging that won't leak or make a mess
Cons:
- Contains alcohol and added perfumes that can dry out hair
- Contains butane and propane that are not environment friendly
My Ratings:
- Residue-Free Formula - 4/5
- Color Pigment - 4.5/5
- Cleansing Power - 5/5
#3 - John Freida Luxurious Volume Dry Shampoo
John Freida is a brand that I like to always review because of the top quality, professional hair products they have for almost hair types.
Now what intrigued me most about this shampoo is that it doesn't have a pigment. So people with any hair color can use.
While this makes it versatile, it also kind of puts it behind products like Batiste and Ambiance that help cover up greys and make hair color more vibrant.
I was also worried that a clear dry shampoo will leave white residue but thankfully that wasn't the case with this product.
However, I did notice that my hair looked a bit stiff after using it. So if you have fine hair and don't want that feeling of hair being weighed down I'd suggest going for a powder dry shampoo like Ambiance.
Otherwise you are fine with this John Frieda one!
Unfortunately this isn't all that's wrong with this shampoo. I also found the scent quite overpowering. And this dry shampoo definitely contains added perfume. Not something you should use if you have a sensitive scalp.
It's a good dry shampoo on it's own. But it doesn't offer you anything different than say a Batiste or Morrocanoil Shampoo gives you. And it's pricier than these two!
Pros:
- It doesn't have any color pigment so any hair color can use it
- Offers heat protection as it protects hair from temperature upto 220°C/428°F
- Adds volume and texture to hair as it's super oil-absorbing
Cons:
- Expensive compared to drugstore brands like Batiste
- Can leave hair stiff after use
- Contains added perfume and is not suitable for sensitive scalps
- The perfume is also quite strong and overpowering
My Ratings:
- Residue-Free Formula - 4/5
- Color Pigment - NA
- Cleansing Power - 4.5/5
Tips
You can use appropriate styling products after using this shampoo.

Moroccan oil has put out one of the best products that are great to keep the color-treated hair. If you have silver or grey hair, this hairspray comes in handy when you need to cover the roots and keep them intact at all times.
You can retrieve the shine of the hair and gives you better texture with every wash.
Light hair colors can be protected well with this dry shampoo as it acts gently on the hair strands. Colored hair is prone to sun damage and this sry shampoo makes sure you have the protection to withstand it.
The one thing I didn't like about this shampoo is that it contains chlorofluorocarbons, which are not good for the environment.
Tips
Comb your hair after you have applied it to your hair so that the tangles are reduced.

Does dry shampoo strip hair colour?
Dry shampoos work what regular shampoos don’t.
People who have colored hair are often advised not to bombard their hair with unnecessary products to ruin the texture of their hair.
Dry shampoos act up very gently on the hair and treat the color on the hair exactly how it should be treated to be lasting for a long time. But again, there are many brands of dry shampoos out there and not all of them are going to cater to colored hair.

Should I use spray or powder dry shampoo on color-treated hair?
The two main types of shampoos are the aerosol spray kind and powder type that you sprinkle on hair.
Most people assume that spray dry shampoos are better for color treated hair as they do not leave a grainy or whitish cast on hair.
But if you choose a tinted product, you can even use powder dry shampoos. Regular starch-based powders (colorless) are also good for light blonde or platinum hair tones as it doesn't show up as much.
Also this choice between aerosol and powder depends on your hair needs.
If you want a dry shampoo which is helps control oiliness and greasiness, powder ones are better as they are more concentrated.
If you want help with grey coverage or have dry scalps, aerosol ones spread more evenly and are lighter. And can be a better choice.
