If you’re trying out twist outs for your natural 4c hair, you need these best hair twist products to create these protective styles. ,
Hair twists are one among the most trending hairstyles in the present day. They look very trendy and fashionable. ,
Hair twists are formed by twisting strands of hair and intertwining them in order to form a twisted pattern (which I often compare to a twisted cheese straw!).
A lot of people often wonder whether their hair twists will stay for long hours, while people with straighter and silkier hair types wonder whether theirs will stay for even a few minutes.
,Well, let’s just say that using the right hair twisting product will do the trick!
Finding the right product is always hard, but choosing the one that you feel would suit you the most should be sufficient. ,
Apart from the products you use, the technique you use too will also play an important role in enhancing the effects of the product used.

How I tested the best hair twist products?
Before I used these products on my natural 4c hair I decided a few parameters on which to judge them. These are given below. After using it and with help from my team, I then rated these products on a scale of 1-5.
Holding Power: The first thing you need to look for in hair twist products is hold, so they keep your twists or knot hairstyles in place
Slip/Moisturizing Power: These products should also be super nourishing and have a good slip so they can help detangle coarse, curly hair
Gentleness: I also looked for gentle products that are free of added chemicals (for the most part) and suited to sensitive scalps like mine. ,
Top Hair Twist Products ,
Tgin Twist and Define Cream
I’m going to start off with the one I love the most, the Thank God It’s Natural (Tgin) Twist and Define Cream. ,
It worked perfectly well on my curly hair and made my hair look smooth, reducing the flyaways and frizz while also making my twists look shiny and well-defined.
It definitely had a long-lasting hold on my twists and made my hair feel very nourished and well-hydrated after application. ,
This could be because the Tgin Twist cream is infused with coconut oil and vitamin E. Both ingredients suit my sensitive scalp very well.
But unfortunately there’s also added perfume which I didn’t like.
I highly recommend using this cream with any additional moisturizer of your choice to get even softer hair.
Pros:
- Works well to hydrate dry hair.
- Contains no parabens, sulfates, petrolatum or lanolin.
- Has a strong and long lasting hold on twists and braids.
- Helps form well-defined twists.
Cons:
- Contains a fruity fragrance which may not be suitable to all.
My Ratings: ,
- Holding Power - 4.5/5
- Slip/Moisturizing Power - 4/5
- Gentleness -3.5/5
Cantu Shea Butter Twist and Lock Gel
I would recommend the Cantu Twist Shea Butter because it works well on any hair type that includes my 4c type curly and under-hydrated hair. ,
It helped me fix my curls and gave my hair twists a strong and long lasting hold. ,
What I also liked about this product is that it kept my flyaways and frizz at bay.
The best part about this product is that it contains many natural ingredients like natural oils and plant extracts. ,
These include macadamia nut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera etc., which helps promote hair shine and improves hair quality and texture.
So I was really glad to see all-natural ingredients as my scalp can react badly to additives.
My only issue was the gel-like texture, it left my hair sticky after use. And it wasn’t very comfortable. ,
Pros:
- Contains many natural ingredients.
- Helps provide a long lasting hold.
- Makes twists and curls feel soft.
Cons:
- The gel-like consistency feels a little sticky.
My Ratings: ,
- Holding Power - 4/5
- Slip/Moisturizing Power - 4.5/5
- Gentleness -4/5
Camille Ross Almond Jai Twist Butter
The Camille Ross Twist Butter for sure works well on all hair types, like it did on mine. ,
I liked the fact that I could use it on both dry and wet hair. It was easy to use and it also worked as a leave-in conditioner.
,But unfortunately it did require touch ups because it didn’t have a long hold. ,
It contains three main ingredients i.e. almond extract that keeps the hair conditioned, aloe vera that helps retain moisture in the hair and honey that makes the hair feel very soft. ,
This really worked well on my hair and made it feel soft and smooth. But if you’re looking for a styling gel for twists than a moisturizer this isn’t it!
Pros:
- Contains some natural ingredients.
- Works well as a leave-in conditioner.
- Works well on both dry and wet hair.
Cons:
- Doesn’t have a very long lasting hold and requires touch ups.
My Ratings: ,
- Holding Power - 3/5
- Slip/Moisturizing Power - 4.5/5
- Gentleness - 4/5
Mielle Organics Twisting Soufflé
This twisting cream is perfect for styling twist-outs and works well on my hair. ,
As I have said before I have curly and relatively dry hair. But this “souffle” has a very lightweight formula although it contains a lot of natural ingredients like essential oils, honey and plant extracts that help condition the hair.
I like how it helped me detangle my hair in no time. It definitely made my twists and curls look more defined.
And it was also great at moisturizing my hair and keeping the curls smooth. But my 4c hair required a lot more moisture. ,
I had to layer it with a different hair cream for it to work on my twist. ,
 ,Pros:
- Best suited for type 4 curls, but does work well with other hair types too.
- Contains some natural ingredients.
- Helps make twists and curls look more defined.
Cons:
- Not very moisturizing.
- My Ratings: ,
- Holding Power - 4.5/5
- Slip/Moisturizing Power - 3/5
- Gentleness - 4.5/5

This product helped my hair restore its moisture and hydrated it so well that it reduced my hair breakage considerably while also making my hair shafts feel much smoother than usual. ,

One thing that I noticed was that it worked best when applied on it on my damp hair.

The SheaMoisture Cream is sort of a holy grail when it comes to 4c hair, so I definitely had to try it! ,
And this high quality cream worked well on my hair (no surprises there!)
It was not only hydrating, but it helped me style my twists perfectly well, since it is specifically formulated for use on curly hair, but does work on other hair types as well.
What I love most about this product is that it contains absolutely no harsh chemicals like silicones, sulfates, parabens, phthalates or petrolatum making it very safe to use on hair. ,
My extra-sensitive scalp was so glad of this! But there’s still added perfume. So peeps with eczema and other scalp issues need to be careful. ,
Those who want to get their hair into twist-outs or braids, this cream is the perfect one for you. ,
It can work well on both dry and damp hair, but I always use it on slightly damp curls.

Qhemet Biologics Aethiopika Hydrate and Twist Butter
What I liked most about the Qhemet Twist Butter is that it works well on hair with any type of porosity by giving it the sufficient amount of moisture that it requires. ,
This product works amazingly for styling of twists or braids and makes the hair look smooth and curls, well-defined.
Once I applied this product on my hair, it made my hair feel so soft and nourished, while my edges felt very smooth. ,
This was definitely a benefit to me because I have relatively dry hair. One thing that ,
I noticed that after the application of this product, letting the product sit in my hair for some time is what made it enhance the product effectiveness to a great extent. ,
I would also recommend leaving the product in your hair overnight and styling your hair the next day to get the best effects and most flexibility to style your hair.
Another reason why I like this product is because it was safe to use on my hair, as it contains no mineral oils, silicones or parabens.

- Has a long lasting hold on twists and braids.
- Works even better when left on overnight.
- Has a long lasting moisturizing effect on the hair.
Cons:
- Relatively more expensive as compared to other such products available for purchase.
