Using hair serums has a lot of benefits to your hair.
There are different types of commercial hair serums in the market. Some aim at controlling frizz, others adding shine to your hair, others aims at Straightening your hair, and many other uses.
Although you can get all this types of commercial hair serums, they might always not work for your hair.
And, buying the wrong type of hair serum might cost you even your hair.
For this reason, I am going to give you different recipes for making hair serums at home depending on what you are aiming to achieve with the serum.

Why you should use home made hair serum
From my introduction to hair serum post, you can see commercial hair serums have both it’s benefits and it’s negative side effects.
Although these negative side effects can be avoided when you pick the right hair serum and apply the hair serum the right way.
However, commercial hair serums contains some harsh ingredients and silicone that might dry your hair.
If by any chance you happen to make a silly mistake, you will be dealing with more than dry hair. If the ingredients are not right for you, you might lose all your hair.
This cannot be the case with home made hair serum.
Since you know what you want a hair serum to achieve to your hair, you can make the right hair serum for that purpose.
Homemade hair serum are formulated using the most gentle ingredients.
There are no chances of the hair serum to damage your hair.
Besides hair serums are very affordable.
DIY Hair serum for fizziness and split ends
If you have natural hair, humidity, change in climate, and water have so much effect on your hair.
You might end up dealing with frizz.
Your hair might also be having flyaways and split ends which don’t look any cute.
So, to prevent this from happening normally, you need to use a hair serum.
And on the spirit of creativity, I will give you a recipe to make hair serum to control and mange frizz, flyaways, and split ends.
Ingredients
- A 50 ml glass bottle with eyedropper
- A metal funnel
- I table spoon jojoba oil
- 2 tablespoon Argan oil
- A out 6 drops rosemary essential oil
- 2 drops of lavender essential oil
- 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 6 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
Method
- In a clean and dry measuring cup add all the ingredients mentioned above.
- Stir all the ingredients together for a few minutes and ensure no air bubbles are formed.
- After the mixture is ready, pour the mixture into a glass jar using the metal funnel.
- Cover the bottle with the eyedropper and store it in a cool dry place.
You can then use this guide to apply the hair serum onto your hair.
DIY hair serum for smooth hair
Smooth hair has low chances of breaking or even tangling.
And since we want you to ease the use of heat or other chemicals to make your hair smooth, we have prepared a recipe on how you can make a hair serum to make your hair smooth.
Ingredients
- 1 table spoon Aloe Vera Gel
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil
- 5 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops of Rosemary essential oil
- 1 tablespoon Argan oil
- 1 tablespoon glycerin
- 2 ounces glass bottle with an eyedropper.
- A measuring cup
- A metal funnel
Method
- In a measuring cup add all the ingredients as measured in the ingredient list above.
- Stir the mixture for about two minutes using a stainless steel spool.
- After the mixture is well mixed, use the metal funnel to pour the mixture into the glass bottle and cover with and eyedropper.
Before applying the hair serum to your hair, ensure you shake well to mix all the resting ingredients.
You can use the smoothing hair serum as frequently as you feel since this hair serum is very light.
DIY Hair serum for silky and soft hair
There is no greater feeling than running your fingers through your hair without them being stuck.
Although this might feel heavenly, you might be inclined to use harsh products to make your hair silky than it’s natural state.
Good thing is that you don’t have to relax your hair to achieve the luxurious feeling of having silky hair.
You can just follow the recipe I have prepared below to make your hair silky at home.
Ingredients
- A 2 ounce clear glass bottle with an eyedropper or pump bottle.
- Cloth pot holder
- A small glass heat-proof jar
- Crockpot
- I tablespoon Argan oil
- 3 tablespoon of jojoba oil
- Some small amount of dried rose petals
- 1 tablespoon dried Gotu kola
- 1 tablespoon dried calendula
- About 30 drops of vitamin E oil.10 drops of Rosemary essential oil
- 10 drops of peppermint essential oil.
Method
- In the glass heatproof glass jar, place the dried Calendula and Gotu kola and then add Jojoba oil till the oil covers the herbs completely.
- Place the cover tightly over the heatproof glass.
- Inside the crockpot, place a folded kitchen towel at the bottom. This aims to prevent chances of the glass jar heating too fast and cracking.
- Place the waterproof jar over the crockpot.
- Add water inside the crockpot until reaches a bit above halfway the side of the jar.
- Place something like a rock on top of the lid to ensure the jar doesn’t float and pour the herbs.
- Turn the temperatures of the crockpot to low and allow the herbs and the oils to boil together for about 10 hours. You can do this overnight.
- Ensure the temperatures are not exceeding 140°C.
- After the 10 hours are over, you can then turn off the crockpot to let the jar cool.
- Use a strainer to separate the oil from the dried herbs.
- Use the metal funnel to pour the mixture into a glass bottle.
- You can then add the rosemary and peppermint essential oil, Vitamin E, dried rose petals and Argan oil into the mixture.
- Cover the glass bottle with the eyedropper and place in a cool dry place.
Since this serum is very light and safe, you can double or triple up the ingredients to make a lot more serum.
When using this hair serum to soften your hair, pour about 10 drops of the serum into your hands.
Rub your hands for a few minutes and then apply it to your hair.
DIY Hair serum for straightening your hair
Not everyone is lucky when it comes to natural hair.
However, if you take good care of your natural hair you can enjoy how amazing it feels and looks.
If your don’t have naturally straight hair, you might be inclined to use relaxers or even heat to straighten your hair.
However, you don’t have to use heat or chemicals to straighten your hair.
Use the guide below to make a hair for straightening your hair.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoon of soy oil
- 3 tablespoon of coconut oil
- 3 tablespoon of olive oil.
- 3 tablespoon of jojoba oil
- 3 tablespoon of peppermint oil
- A 2 ounce glass bottle with an eyedropper
- A measuring jar
- A metal funnel
Method
- Pour a the ingredients in a measuring jar.
- Mix the ingredients using a stainless steel spoon for a few minutes until all the oils are well mixed.
- Use the metal funnel to pour the mixture into the glass bottle.
- Cover the bottle using the eye dropper.
Coconut oil solidifies the mixture after it has stayed for a few days.
When using the serum to straighten your hair place the bottle inside a bowl of warm water to melt the serum.
Pour at least 10 drops of the serum after it is well melted and rub it between your hands before applying it to your hair.
DIY hair serum for dry hair
If you are like me, you suffer from an oily scalp but very dry hair, you are in the right place.
It might be very hard for use to use oils for our hairs since the excess oil makes us feel uncomfortable.
Luckily, there are serums for our type of hair.
And even more lucky, you should can makeup your own hair serum at home for dry skin.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of Argan oil
- 2 tablespoon of Grapeseed oil.
- 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon of avocado oil
- 5 drops of peppermint oil
- 2 drops of lavender oil
- 2 drops of Rosemary oils
- 2 ounce of glass bottle with a eyedropper.
- A metal funnel
- A stainless steel
Method
- Pour all the ingredients inside a measuring jar.
- Mix the ingredients well using a stainless steel spoon.
- Use the metal funnel to pour the mixture inside the glass bottle and then use the eyedropper to cover the bottle.
Always warm up the glass bottle inside a warm bowl of water.
After pour some amount of the serum on your hands and heat it up by rubbing your hands together for a few minutes.
Then, apply the serum on your hair.
This will make your hair look healthy and vibrant.
DIY homemade hair serums are made using some ingredients that are readily available in your kitchen or your local essential oil store.
You also don’t need a lot of expertise to make these hair serums at home.
All you need is to follow my guide, buy all the ingredients are you are good to go.
One other amazing thing is that serums are safe and lightweight so, you can use them as frequently as you want.
And there are no negative side effects of using homemade hair serum at home.
