OGX Shampoo Review 2024 | What Types of OGX To Buy for What Hair

No, you don’t have to empty your purse on expensive, luxury hair care products to get gorgeous, silky hair. Drugstore brand shampoos work just fine.

But the sheer variety of them could be mind-boggling. Take OGX, for example. It’s a popular haircare brand with tons of shampoo varieties to suit your hair.

The first time we found OGX was when we tried the OGX Extra Strength Honey Hold Mega Glue. And boy did it deliver! Not one single hair was out of place after using this hair gel, not a single one! You can check it out on amazon.

OGX Shampoo Review

About OGX

The company OGX was started by Todd Christopher way back in 2003. At that time, this hair care brand was called "Organix".

However, Christopher began to face litigation over this name. There were concerns that the name Organix was misleading and would lead customers to believe the products were organic, when in fact, they were not!

So in 2013, the name of the brand was changed to OGX.

OGX shampoos have made a name for themselves for their wide range of products which contain exotic ingredients.

There are no sulfates or parabens found in OGX shampoos.

Some shampoos, like the Weightless Hydration + Coconut Water Shampoo do contain Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, a milder form of surfactants.

But this ingredient is nowhere as harsh as Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Sodim Lauryl Sulfate.

OGX has made a name for itself as an affordable, drugstore shampoo. They even have easily distinguishable bottles that have a short, round shape. Most OGX shampoos don't cost more than $10.

There are OGX shampoos for straight hair. Another for naturally curly tresses. A shampoo for hair fall, dandruff, dullness, and so many more complaints. There are even shampoos for dyed hair.

And the best part is that all of them are made from natural, exotic ingredients that keep your hair looking their healthy best.

But you must be thinking...

“Hold up! How do I find the right shampoo for me?” We’ve got you covered on that point. Here’s a review of the top OGX shampoos. Take your pick.

How I tested the top OGX Shampoos?

I used these OGX shampoos on my own hair for a few weeks and then rated them on a scale of 1-5 using the following parameters.

  • Gentleness On Hair - The first thing I looked out for is how gentle the shampoo is while cleansing hair. Almost all OGX shampoos are sulfate-free, but I still checked for other milder surfactants and ingredients that could damage hair.
  • Effectiveness Of Formula - You cannot expect a shampoo for dry hair to be clarifying and one for oily hair to be moisturizing. So I checked how effective the shampoo is at delivering what it promises.
  • Absence of Harmful Ingredients - Some shampoos contains preservatives that cause side effects like parabens or DMDM hydantoin, others come with alcohol or perfume that leaves hair dry. So I checked if the shampoos were free of these ingredients or not.

Best OGX Shampoos 2024

#1 - OGX Extra Strength Refreshing Scalp + Tea Tree Mint Shampoo

best smelling ogx shampoo

I was looking for something that helps with flaking, itchiness and inflammation when I found the OGX Extra Strength Refreshing Scalp + Tea Tree Mint shampoo. And I'm thankful I did.

This is one of the top OGX shampoos for dandruff control and it comes at cheap, drugstore prices. So my wallet couldn't have been happier.

The major ingredient here is tea tree oil which is famous for its antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This shampoo got rid of dandruff in 3 weeks of using and also helped reduce itching considerably

Plus, it has witch hazel that acts as an astringent and cleanses the excess oil from your scalp. So if you have oily hair like me you can use this one. If you've got dry scalp, I suggest you try a more moisturizing OGX shampoo like the Coconut Milk one.

But the most surprising part about the shampoo was the scent. The peppermint that leaves a clean, fresh feeling. But unfortunately this is an added perfume. So if you have very sensitive scalp, it might not suit you.

I found that the regular use of this OGX tea tree mint shampoo left my tresses softer, healthier and bouncier. It's great if you have dandruff-prone, limp hair that is in need of volume.

This product is suitable for all hair textures. So curly haired girlies can you it too. Although I'd recommend using a very nourishing conditioner aferwards. And like all other OGX shampoos, it is sulphate-free, so don't hesitate before using it on color-treated hair.

Pros:

  • Helps remove dandruff flakes as it contains tea tree oil
  • Controls itching and redness as tea tree oil formula is anti-inflammatory
  • Controls excess sebum production as it contains witch hazel
  • Pleasant mint scent that is not overwhelming
  • Sulfate-free shampoo can be used on color-treated hair

Cons:

  • Leaves hair dry and frizzy due to clarifying ingredients
  • Makes hair difficult to detangle as it strips moisture

My Ratings:

  • Gentleness on Hair - 3.5/5
  • Effectiveness of Formula - 4.5/5
  • Absence of Harmful Ingredients - 4/5

#2 - OGX Weightless Hydration + Coconut Water Shampoo

best ogx shampoo dry hair

Here’s the thing. Sometimes my hair needs that extra boost of hydration, but using certain moisturising products makes it feel heavier and weighed down.

It is especially hard to strike a balance between keeping hair hydrated and grease-free if you have an oily scalp like mine. And this is where I feel the OGX weightless hydration shampoo really shines.

When I used this shampoo I found it cleansed my hair but didn't strip moisture a lot the way the Tea Tree Oil shampoo did. And it made my hair softer but it wasn't as rich as a formula as the Coconut Milk Shampoo contains.

So it's the perfect middle path in my eyes!

The hero ingredient here is nourishing coconut water that instantly rejuvenates dull, dry hair strands. It also contains electrolytes that give that nutrient boost to your scalp.

I also liked the addition of coconut oil that adds softness and shine to hair. The shampoo is suitable for all hair types, but thin, brittle hair can really benefit from it as it adds moisture without weighing thin strands down.

The only issue I had with this shampoo is the weird jelly-like texture it becomes. It feels really slimy when you use it in the shower. Otherwise it's one of OGX's best offerings.

Pros:

  • Hydrates hair without leaving it greasy as it has coconut water
  • Good for people with oily scalps as it doesn't leave residue behind
  • Can add volume to limp strands as it doesn't weigh down hair with heavy ingredients

Cons:

  • Weird sticky consistency of the shampoo makes it uncomfortable to use

My Ratings:

  • Gentleness on Hair - 4.5/5
  • Effectiveness of Formula - 4.5/5
  • Absence of Harmful Ingredients - 4.5/5

#3 - OGX Ever-Straightening + Brazilian Keratin Smooth Shampoo

best ogx shampoo for frizzy hair

Who doesn’t love experimenting with their hair? But having dry, damaged strands after undergoing keratin treatments or using can put a damper on things.

So I tried out this OGX Ever-Straightening + Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo as it promised to do help maintain hair after keratin and other styling treatments. Does it work?

Well yes. I used it on my keratin straightened hair for only 2 weeks before I could see it working its magic. It leaves my hair soft, nourished and naturally straight after use.

How? Well, the formulation is rich in nourishing ingredients like keratin proteins, avocado oil and coconut butter that help smoothen the strands and repair hair cuticles.

The keratin proteins form a sort of barrier on the hair as well. So your hair not just looks silky and shiny when you step out, it is protected from pollution too.

I really liked this inclusion of natural ingredients in the shampoo, so that was a plus for me.

Speaking of ingredients I was shocked to discover the presence of DMDM Hydantoin in the product. Now this is a preservative that is now considered harmful to health.

Maybe OGX's new line is removing this ingredient from their formulas but the bottle I bought showed it listed still. So be careful while you make your purchase.

Pros:

  • Good for keratin treated hair as it helps maintain smooth hair texture
  • Works as a hair straightening shampoo as it contains ingredients that smoothen change hair cuticle
  • Repairs damage caused by chemical treatments as it adds lost protein to hair
  • Maintain hair shine and softness as it contains coconut butter

Cons:

  • Contains DMDM Hydantoin (chemical preservative) that is known to cause side effects

My Ratings:

  • Gentleness on Hair - 4.5/5
  • Effectiveness of Formula - 5/5
  • Absence of Harmful Ingredients - 3/5

#4 - OGX Frizz-Defy/Moisture + Shea Soft & Smooth Shampoo

best ogx shampoo African American hair

If your main hair-related battle is with frizz and dryness, then try the OGX Frizz-Defy/Moisture + Shea Soft & Smooth shampoo.

It’s one among the top OGX shampoos for naturally curly, thick or coarse hair textures.

The shampoo contains ingredients like agave nectar, coconut oil, and shea butter that condition hair strands, leaving them soft, shiny and manageable.

Its nourishing formula also helps repair split ends, giving you healthier hair. A little heads up. The formula can be too rich for some scalp types.

But other than that, we love how this OGX shampoo leaves the hair frizz-free and pleasantly fragranced.

Pros:

  • Helps control frizz
  • Nourishes dry hair
  • Good for natural hair and 4c hair
  • Repairs hair damage

Cons:

  • Not for straight, thin hair types
  • Can leave oily scalps greasier

#5 - OGX Renewing + Argan Oil Of Morocco Shampoo

best ogx shampoo colored hair

There’s a reason argan oil is called liquid gold. It is chock full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. And it's also the major ingredient in the OGX Renewing + Argan Oil Of Morocco shampoo.

It nourishes the strands, strengthens the roots and improves the elasticity of hair. So your hair looks softer and healthier than before.

Plus, the shampoo has got silk proteins that lock in hydration, keeping your hair feeling silky soft. And if you’ve got dyed hair, it also helps shield them from UV rays that can cause the colour to fade.

Pros:

  • Helps nourish dry, dehydrated hair
  • Makes hair feel soft
  • Improves hair strength, reducing breakage
  • Good for color-treated hair

Cons:

  • Can make thin hair look limp
  • Chemical smell
  • Causes product build-up on scalp

#6 - OGX Thick & Full + Biotin & Collagen Shampoo

best ogx shampoo for thin hair

Blow drying your hair to get those bouncy, voluminous locks is not something you can do every day. Even if you can, it really damages the hair.

So how do you amp up the volume in your tresses? The OGX Thick & Full + Biotin & Collagen Shampoo can help.

This shampoo boasts of ingredients like hydrolyzed wheat protein, bitcoin and collagen that make your hair strands look plumper and softer.

It’s safe for colour-treated hair and instantly rejuvenates damaged, lifeless tresses. If you want that salon-style look at home, wash your hair with this shampoo before styling.

Pros:

  • Adds thickness to hair
  • Makes limp hair bouncy
  • Helps thinning hair look fuller
  • Sulfate-free

Cons:

  • Not very nourishing

#7 - OGX Restoring + Bonding Plex Salon Technology Shampoo

best ogx shampoo damaged hair

Keeping your hair healthy is not that easy. Why, you ask? For starters, pollution and UV rays damage the hair strands. Then there’s the whole colouring, straightening, chemical treatment routine we subject our locks too.

The result of these is dull, damaged and brittle hair. And that’s exactly what the OGX Restoring + Bonding Plex Salon Technology shampoo aims to fix.

It contains vegetable proteins and cysteine, both of which nourish and repair the hair strands. They leave tresses soft, strong and healthy-looking.

Regular use improves the moisture retention of the hair and adds shine too.

So if you’re tired of frequent salon-trips, this shampoo, when used with the conditioner and bonding cream, gives you that deep-conditioning treatment at home.

Is the OGX shampoo and conditioner good for your hair?

OGX shampoo and conditioner can be good for your hair, depending on your specific needs. These products are known for their diverse formulations, catering to different hair types and concerns.

OGX shampoos and conditioners often contain natural ingredients like argan oil, coconut milk, and biotin, which can help nourish and strengthen hair.

However, some variants may contain sulfates or silicones, which might not be suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive scalps or specific hair care preferences.

It's essential to choose the right OGX product based on your hair type and personal preferences for the best results.

How to select the best OGX shampoos for your hair?

Before you select the OGX shampoos for locks, keep in mind the following factors:

Scalp Type:

Ingredients are the topmost things that should be on your mind while selecting ANY shampoo and not just OGX. The components of the shampoo should match your hair and scalp's needs.

For example, if you have a oily scalp then shampoos with more nourishing ingredients like Moroccan argan oil, Kukui oil, shea butter, etc. will feel too heavy and leave hair greasy and limp.

On the other hand, dry scalps can get even drier when you use shampoos with tea tree oil, witch hazel and other ingredients that help decrease sebum production.

Hair Texture:

Every hair texture is different. Some people have poker straight hair other have slight waves. Then there are people with type 3 hair (curly textures) and type 4 hair (Afro-textured hair).

Straight, fine hair requires more volume. So shampoos with mint, citrus extract, biotin, and other such ingredients that remove excess oil and add bounce is what you need.

Curly hair requires more hydration as it has a high porosity. This type of hair is also more prone to getting frizzy.

So these hair types require keratin that smoothens out frizz and nourishing oils like argan oil, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, etc. that add moisture.

Afro hair requires most moisturization as its very dry and coarse. It's also prone to shrinkage and tangling. So super rich ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, are all helpful.

Hair Issues:

A shampoo isn't just for cleansing, it should help keep your hair troubles at bay. There are OGX shampoos tailored to fight several hair issues.

So if you have dandruff, you can choose OGX shampoos with ingredients like eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree oil, ginger, witch hazel, and more.

To reduce hair fall you need to look for OGX shampoos with ingredients like caffeine which a hair follicle stimulant and DHT blockers which control the hormonal reason of hair loss

If your main issue is frizz, then there are several smoothening shampoos as well.

Chemical or Color Treatment

Almost all OGX shampoos are sulfate free. These harsh surfactants are the main reason why hair color gets stripped from the strands.

But even then there are a lot of OGX shampoos that help increase the vibrancy and brightness of hair color.

The purple shampoo (like the Lavender Platinum Tone Reviving Shampoo) helps cancel out brassy notes from bleached blonde hair.

Then there are shampoos like the Bamboo Radiant Brunette that contain UVA and UVB filters and protect hair color from fading in the sun.

If you've got chemical treatments like keratin or smoothening, you can try the Ever-Straightening + Brazilian Keratin Smooth Shampoo or the Restoring + Bonding Plex Salon Technology Shampoo.

There’s always loads of questions in people’s minds when it comes to trying out different brands of haircare or even skincare products.

And why not? Having healthy, beautiful hair is something anyone would want.

So we’ve tried to answer a few of your frequently asked questions below. Take a look!
